How to figure the cost of concrete

Work out how many cubic yards the job takes, multiply by the price per yard (or count the bags and multiply by the bag price), then add any delivery fees and the labor from your contractor's quote.

  1. Cubic yards = length × width × thickness (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27, plus the extra percentage
  2. Concrete cost = cubic yards × price per yard, or bags × price per bag
  3. Labor = square feet × labor per square foot
  4. Total = concrete + labor + fees; per square foot = total ÷ square feet

Worked example: a 30 × 30 slab, 4 inches thick

30 × 30 = 900 square feet. At 4 inches thick that's 900 × 4 ÷ 12 = 300 cubic feet, or 300 ÷ 27 = 11.11 cubic yards. At the 2025 average of $179.95 a yard, the concrete costs about $1,999.44, or $2.22 a square foot, before extra, delivery fees and labor.

Concrete cost questions

How much does a yard of concrete cost?

The average ready-mix selling price was $179.95 a cubic yard in 2025 (Concrete Financial Insights Index). The NRMCA's 2023 producer survey found an average of $159.68 including fees, with $150.03 to $170.66 between its lowest and highest quartiles (NRMCA Annual Performance Benchmarking Survey and State of the Industry, October 2024 (2023 data)). Those are averages over large orders; a small residential load usually costs more per yard, so call a local supplier for a quote.

How much does a concrete slab cost per square foot?

For the concrete alone, a cubic yard covers 81 square feet at 4 inches thick, so at $179.95 a yard the material is about $2.22 a square foot. A finished slab costs more once base preparation, forms, reinforcement, placing and finishing are added. Labor varies widely by area and job, so enter the per-square-foot price from a contractor's quote above.

How much does a 30 × 30 concrete slab 4 inches thick cost?

It takes 11.11 cubic yards, about $1,999.44 of concrete at $179.95 a yard. With the usual extra for spills and uneven ground, order a little more; press "30 × 30 slab" above to see it with your own extra, fees and labor.

Is bagged concrete cheaper than ready-mix?

A cubic yard takes about 45 bags of 80 lb, so multiply that by your store's bag price and compare it with your supplier's price per yard plus delivery. Bags usually win on small jobs where a truck would charge short-load fees; ready-mix wins once the job is big enough to mix by the truckload. Switch "Buying" above to compare the two for your job.

What is a short-load fee?

Ready-mix trucks are built for full loads: the average load delivered by NRMCA survey participants in 2023 was 8.5 cubic yards. Many suppliers add a charge when you order much less than a full truck. Ask for it when you get your quote and add it under "Delivery and other fees".
