How to calculate square feet
Measure in feet and multiply. For a room that isn't a plain rectangle, split it into rectangles, triangles and circles, work out each one, and add them up.
- Rectangle = length × width
- Triangle = base × height ÷ 2
- Circle = 3.1416 × radius² (radius = diameter ÷ 2)
- Measured in inches? Divide each side by 12 first, or divide the square inches by 144.
Worked example
An L-shaped room: a 16 × 12 ft main room with a 8 × 6 ft alcove. Split it into two rectangles: 16 × 12 = 192 sq ft and 8 × 6 = 48 sq ft. Together: 240 sq ft, or 26.7 square yards (÷ 9).

Square footage questions
How many square feet are in an acre?
43,560. An acre doesn't have to be square: a lot 660 ft long and 66 ft wide is 43,560 sq ft, also one acre. To turn square feet into acres, divide by 43,560. The converter above does it in either direction.
How do I calculate the square footage of a room?
Measure the length and width in feet, wall to wall, and multiply. If the room is L-shaped or has a bay, split it into rectangles and add them: set "Areas to add up" to 2 or more above. Include closets if you're buying flooring for them.
How do I convert inches to square feet?
Multiply the two sides in inches, then divide by 144, because a square foot is 12 × 12 inches. A 36 × 48 in top is 1,728 square inches, or 12 square feet. Choose "inches" above and the calculator does it for you.
How do I convert square meters to square feet?
Multiply by 10.7639. A 20 m² room is about 215 sq ft. To go from square feet to square meters, multiply by 0.092903.
How big is 200 square feet?
