How to add feet and inches
Turn each length into inches (feet × 12, plus the inches and the fraction), do the math, then turn the answer back: divide by 12 for the feet, and the remainder is the inches. Round the leftover to the nearest mark on your tape.
- Inches to feet: divide by 12. The whole number is feet; the remainder is inches.
- Feet to inches: multiply by 12.
- Decimal feet: multiply the decimal part by 12 for inches, then the decimal part of that by 16 for sixteenths.
- Centimeters: divide by 2.54 for inches (an inch is exactly 2.54 cm).
Worked example
5 ft 7 3/8 in plus 3 ft 9 5/8 in: 5 + 3 = 8 feet, and 7 3/8 + 9 5/8 = 17 inches. 17 inches is 1 foot 5 inches, so the total is 9 ft 5 in (113 inches). To cut 15 feet into 7 equal pieces: 180 inches ÷ 7 = 25.714 inches, which is 2 ft 1 11/16 in to the nearest sixteenth.

Feet and inches questions
How do you convert inches to feet?
Divide by 12. The whole number is the feet and the remainder is the inches: 71 inches ÷ 12 = 5 remainder 11, so 71 inches is 5 ft 11 in, or 5.917 feet as a decimal. The chart above covers common sizes from 24 to 192 inches, and the inches to feet calculator has every inch from 1 to 120.
How many inches are in 6 feet?
72. Multiply feet by 12: 5 feet is 60 inches, 8 feet is 96 and 10 feet is 120. For feet and inches, add the inches: 5 ft 7 in is 67 inches.
How do I turn decimal feet into feet and inches?
Keep the whole feet and multiply the decimal part by 12. For 12.37 feet, 0.37 × 12 = 4.44 inches, which is about 4 7/16 in on a tape, so 12.37 feet is 12 ft 4 7/16 in. Choose "Convert" and "feet (decimal)" above to do it for any number.
How tall is 180 cm in feet and inches?
5 ft 10 7/8 in, or 70.9 inches: 180 ÷ 2.54 = 70.87 inches, and that ÷ 12 is 5 feet with 10.87 inches left over. The height chart above covers 150 to 190 cm.
How do I divide a length into equal parts?
Choose "Divide", enter the length and the number of pieces. 15 feet in 7 pieces is 2 ft 1 11/16 in each. Each saw cut takes the width of the blade, so cut the first piece and measure the rest from the board, not from a tape laid end to end.
What about square feet and linear feet?
This calculator works with lengths. For an area, use the square footage calculator; to total up boards or trim by the foot, use the linear feet calculator.
