Digits in parentheses repeat forever: 0.1(6) is 0.1666…. The small number after a fraction is how far it is from your decimal.

How to convert a decimal to a fraction

Write the digits after the point over 10, 100, 1,000 and so on (one zero for each decimal place), then simplify by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common factor.

  1. Terminating decimal: 0.6875 = 6875 ÷ 10000; both divide by 625, so it's 11/16
  2. Repeating decimal: the repeating digits go over as many 9s as there are digits (then shift by the decimal places before them): 0.1666… = 1/10 + 6/90 = 1/6
  3. Fraction to decimal: divide the top by the bottom; if a remainder comes back, the digits from there repeat
  4. Tape measure: multiply the decimal part by 16 (or 8, 32, 64), round to a whole number, and that's how many sixteenths

Worked example

A drawing says 2.3 in. The whole part is 2. For the rest, 0.3 × 16 = 4.8, which rounds to 5, so mark 2 5/16 in, which is +0.0125 in from exact. The exact fraction is 2 3/10 in, but no tape has tenths of an inch.

Decimal and fraction questions

How do you turn a decimal into a fraction?

Put the decimal digits over 1 followed by as many zeros as there are decimal places, then simplify. 0.625 has three places, so it's 625/1000, and dividing both by 125 gives 5/8. Type any decimal above and the calculator does it, including numbers above 1 (1.375 = 1 3/8) and negatives.

How do I convert decimal inches to a fraction?

Multiply the decimal part by 16 and round: that's the sixteenths. 0.6875 × 16 = 11, so 0.6875 in is 11/16 in. For finer work use 32nds or 64ths; choose "Tape measure to the nearest" above. To add or subtract the measurements, use the feet and inches calculator.

How do you convert a repeating decimal to a fraction?

Enter the decimals before the repeat, and the digits that repeat in the second box. 0.1666… is 0.1 with 6 repeating: 1/6. 0.333… is 0 with 3 repeating, exactly 1/3; typed as just 0.333 it's 333/1000, and the "simplest" line shows 1/3.

How do you turn a fraction into a decimal?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. Some fractions never end: 1 ÷ 3 = 0.(3), where the digits in parentheses repeat forever. Choose "Fraction to decimal" above for any fraction or mixed number.

What is 1/3 as a decimal?

0.(3), which is 0.333… with the 3 repeating forever, or 0.3333 rounded to four places. As a percent it's 33.33%.

What is 0.625 as a fraction?

5/8, or 15.875 mm if it's inches. The chart above lists every 64th of an inch; to turn inches into feet, use the inches to feet calculator.
